About the Washington Lottery
The Washington Lottery dates back to 1982 when new law came into life which legalized lotteries in the whole state. Earlier, it was a hotly-debated topic whether to establish lottery or not. And it lasted almost decade. People who were against the lottery claimed that due to recession the state is quite poor. Another topic which was brought up was that not all people agreed to the fact that all the revenues should go to education.
This modern lottery shouldn’t be associated with the one which was available in 1769 and was named after George Washington. It was a completely independent lottery and, sadly, offered slaves as prizes.
Lotteries across the USA tend to advertise themselves in media. First time a commercial related to lottery in the USA appeared in media was 1966. And last year, lotteries spent more than $400 million on advertising in total. Interestingly, one of the most creative lotteries is the one from Washington. It’s because the commercials included fairly extraordinary scenes like Frisbee being thrown by a robot or flightless birds being taken up to the sky. It was all accompanied by catchy music.
Even without advertising the lottery would still remain immensely popular as it handed out enormous jackpots. 2008 was the most successful year for players in terms of how high the prizes won turned out to be. About $10 million was won twice. Each time by a single person! But the record holder is Richard Warren, a man from Hoquiam who won an incredible sum of $93 million in 2002.
All the biggest wins come from multi-state games which are Powerball and Mega Millions. Both games have their drawings twice a week. Also, people are able to play other games like Daily, Hit 5 and Keno. But in the category of single-state games the biggest one is the Washington Lotto which was established in 1984 and since then, over $1 billion was given to lucky players. In 2000, there was a big jackpot of $32 million and it finally was divided into three parts as three people managed to choose the right numbers.
